Chelsea Duplex 

When the unit directly below their one-bedroom apartment came on the market, the owners jumped at the opportunity to expand their home into a duplex for their growing family. The gut renovation combines the two barbell apartments with a connecting stair, allowing for an expanded kitchen, a true primary suite, and two additional bedrooms.

Located in the Chelsea Historic District, the 1850s Italianate building offered original wide-plank wood flooring in one unit and exposed brick in the other. The design of the finishes and detailing seek to unite the two floors and defer to the historic character. Light, neutral-colored walls and cabinetry balance the existing materials and maximize the impact of natural daylight.
